Refugio moves into final of Region IV-2A tourney

SAN ANTONIO - Sierra Mascarro pounded down 18 kills and had three blocks to help the Refugio Lady Cats set up a showdown against top-ranked Poth today in the Region IV-2A volleyball tournament.
Mascarro and the Lady Cats rolled past Stockdale 25-18, 25-21, 25-22 to advance to today's 11 a.m. final against Poth(36-5) at the Blossom Athletic Center.
Poth, the No. 1 ranked team in Class 2A, fought off the Schulenburg Lady Horns 25-21, 25-13, 27-25 to advance.
The winner of today's championship game will advance to the UIL state tournament set for Thursday-Saturday at Strahan Coliseum on the campus of Texas State University-San Marcos.
Virginia Silvas added 16 assists for Refugio (34-6), while Cassandra Durst had 10 digs.
Brianna Mendel paced Schulenburg (26-13) with 16 digs, eight kills and two aces, while Brandy Vela added 11 assists and Brittany McNeal six blocks.
