Seniority plentiful for 2004
Lady Horn volleyball team

Lady Horn head volleyball coach Melissa Zapalac welcomed a large group to start the 2004 campaign, including eight seniors and a whopping 17 freshman.   Following scrimmages this past weekend at Yoakum and Hallettsville, the Lady Horns got their regular season started at midweek and will host a tournament Thursday through Saturday.

I was very pleased with our play and effort, Zapalac said. With a new district to

compete in, our keys to success will be passing the ball and becoming aggressive at the net both blocking and attacking.   Last year, the Lady Horns competed in a very tough district with Brazos, East Bernard and Weimar making the playoffs. Schulenburg finished 4-6 in district and 15-16 overall. Royal and Houston Yes rounded out the district.

Although two of the three playoff teams from 2003 got put into another district, two others Van Vleck and Ganado were switched over into a district with Schulenburg, Weimar, Tidehaven and Industrial.

Most of the statistical leaders from a year ago return and are seniors. Judy Blevins topped the team in kills with 284, Beth Oeding had the most digs with 315, Brandy Vela was the top setter with 751 assists, Sara Kalina led in blocks with 92, and Amy Henneke posted the most aces with 78. In addition, Blevins had the second-most aces with 73, was second in blocks with 65 while Oeding was runner-up in kills with 207 and had the second-best serve percentage at 94.15.

Other seniors are Katie Schrader and Marla Demel, both defensive specialists who saw a lot of action last year. Teressa Talbot rounds out the senior group after posting 87 kills and 23 blocks in 2003. Joining the eight seniors on varsity will be junior Brittany McNeal and sophomore Brianna Mendel.
