Schulenburg's 4-0 record and No. 1 state ranking in Class 2A was achieved against such Class 3A schools as Hallettsville, Rice Consolidated, Manor and Yoakum.

Now comes Class 4A Wheatley. The Shorthorns meet the 2-1-1 Wheatley Wildcats in a 3 p.m. kickoff today at Delmar Stadium in a closing non-district game for both.

The Schulenburg-Wheatley game came about after realignment left both with open dates on the fifth weekend of the season.

Smaller schools playing teams two classes bigger in enrollment is rare but not unusual. Class 3A Liberty defeated Class 5A Vidor 28-19 in the third week of the season.

The Shorthorns bring a potent 465.3-yard offensive average and a 43.2-point scoring average to the city in their first game against a Houston Independent School District entry.

Jason Houston has rushed for 536 yards and scored 10 touchdowns; Steve Sartain has passed for 788 yards and nine TDs. Receiver Jamie Jackson has caught 14 passes for 339 yards.

Sophomore James Fowler is the leading Wheatley rusher with 613 yards on an area-high 119 carries. Quarterback Alvin Steele and wide receiver Dwayne Smith are the leading District 21-4A pass-catch combination, Steele with 556 yards on 28-for-52 passing; Smith has caught 15 passes for 250 yards and four touchdowns.

Eisenhower (4), Klein (7), Madison (8), Katy (11), Washington (12) and Cy Falls (18) are area-ranked teams playing today.

All are involved in district games except Madison (3-1), which travels to Corpus Christi for a 2 p.m. kickoff against Carroll.

The headliner of the ranked teams sends Cy Falls (3-1, 0-1) to Klein (3-1, 1-0) in a District 16-5A showdown. Cy Falls was knocked from the unbeaten ranks last week by Jersey Village 31-17 in a 16-5A opener.

Eisenhower (3-1, 1-0) meets Spring (2-2, 0-1) at Thorne in 21-5A, Katy (3-1, 1-0) is at Tully to play Stratford (1-3, 0-1) in 19-5A and Washington (4-0, 1-0) has an 18-5A date with Sam Houston (0-4, 0-1) at Delmar.

The 15-game schedule includes the 20-5A matchup at Mercer between Elsik (1-3, 0-1) and Willowridge (1-3, 0-1), who were preseason picks to battle for the district championship.

The time was changed from 7:30 to 1 p.m. for the District 24-5A game that sends La Porte (2-2, 1-0) to Clear Creek (1-3, 0-1).
